Aneja Simončič wins the first gold in Utrecht

18. July 2013 Utrecht 2013 Athlete Aneja Simončič won the first gold medal for Slovenia at the 12th European Youth Olympic Festival.

Simončič proved to be the fastest in the 400 meter hurdles. She crossed the finish line with a time of 1:00.27, lagging slightly behind the qualification time she set on Wednesday. She did justify her favorite status and snatched the second track and field medal in the Netherlands. A bronze medal was won on Wednesday by Tina Božič in the long jump, along with another two medals for judoists Andreja Leški and Luka Harpf.


“Indescribable. It really hasn’t sunk in yet, I’m so happy. I just can’t believe it,” said Simončič, and went on to comment on the race: “I was a bit nervous, because I didn’t know what will happen. You never know which way a race will go.”


Another two bronze medals were achieved by Lara Omerzu in the high jump and Tina Božič in the triple jump.
