The Olympic Games are a sports event that is organized in a summer and winter version. It gathers together premier athletes from around the world to compete for the greatest sports awards of all - the Olympic medals. The Games take place every four years, or two years as the winter and summer Olympics alternate. The first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896 in Athens and have, with the exception of the periods during the First and Second World Wars, gone on uninterrupted.
