Sochi was elected as the host of the 22nd winter Olympic Games on 4 July 2007 by the IOC members at its 119th session in Guatemala. In the second and final, round of votes, Sochi competed for the spot with Salzburg, Austria, and Pyeongchang, Korea, winning the vote by 51 votes.
